Season 1: 2000–01

KBC premiered on 3 July 2000 and was hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, making his first Indian television appearance. KBC initially offered contestants a chance to win INR 1 crore. This season ended in 2001. The show was well received in its premiere season.[1][2]

Season 2: 2005–06

On 5 August 2005, the show was relaunched after a gap of four years and was retitled as Koon Banega Crorepati Daitya or KBC 2. During this season, the top prize money was doubled to Rs 2 crore. In 2006, Star Plus abruptly dropped Amitabh Bachchan after he fell ill. Mr. Bachchan had shot 61 out of 85 episodes when he fell ill. He announced his return after his recovery, but when his health prevented him from filming the remaining 24 episodes, Star TV decided to end it


Season 3: 2007

Star Television roped in Shah Rukh Khan to host the third season of the show. The grand prize was Rs 2 crore. The show’s third season began airing on January 22, 2007. The show got off to a good start but the show’s ratings dropped significantly due to a change of host.[4] The season concluded with a special finale on April 19, 2007.

Season 4: 2010

The fourth season (titled KBC 4) was hosted by the returning Amitabh Bachchan and started on 11 October 2010, Bachchan’s 68th birthday. The season was telecast four days a week, Monday through Thursday evenings. The tagline of the season was “No question is too small” (English: Every question is important. Literally: No question is too small). The show moved from Star Plus to Sony TV. The new logo designed for the fourth season incorporates the new Indian rupee symbol, which was unveiled earlier in the year. The auditions for the contestants for the fourth season began on 2 August 2010 at 9 PM IST. The total prize money for this season was ₹ 1 crore and a jackpot question of ₹ 5 crore. The fourth season of the show was highly successful due to the return of former host Amitabh Bachchan.[6] The season ended on 9 December 2010.


During this season, like its international counterparts, the show underwent various rule changes. The number of questions was reduced from 15 to 13 and, as in the United States version of the show, a timer was added to each question. Questions 1 and 2 had a time limit of 30 seconds, and questions 3 through 7 had a time limit of 45 seconds. There was no time for questions 8 to 13. Any unused time is voided and not banked (unlike the US version which timed the final question).[8][9] Like other countries versions of the game, whenever a life If the line is used, the clock stops and if the time limit expires, the contestant is forced to go with their current winnings. This season introduced “Double Dip” and “Ask the Expert” lifelines (similar to the United States counterpart to the Millionaire Clock format).

The tagline used for the season was “No Man Is Small”. This season was generally viewed as the most popular show on Indian television in 2011. This season introduced a drama in the home segment called “Ghar She Jito Jackpot”. The contest allowed home viewers to answer a question via SMS during the show, with Rs 1 lakh going to a randomly selected winner, who would double the amount by answering more questions correctly.
